This Colorado Department of Education workshop with Dr. Kathleen Kinkema has been developed to meet the needs of schools preparing to go through the process of writing a new physical education curriculum or updating an existing curriculum. The workshop clinician leads participants through the sequence of steps involved in the curriculum development process, illustrating when it is important for all teachers to work collaboratively and when small groups are needed to facilitate the process. The workshop guides participants through a process of understanding and reflecting on the national standards, state standards and district standards in physical education, using them as a basis for curriculum development. This workshop experience also provides insight into the importance of developing spiraling curriculum from kindergarten through high school with a planned scope and sequence, highly organized skills progressions, and careful attention to skill development at the appropriate grade levels.
