LiveWell Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs was selected in 2007 to participate in the YMCA of the USA’s (Y-USA) Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative, an effort of the national Y-USA Activate America® Healthier Communities Initiatives and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The initiative focuses on collaborative engagement with community leaders, the influence of the environment on health and well-being, and the role policy plays in sustaining change. This opportunity brought together a group of community leaders representing multiple sectors to work collaboratively on efforts to improve opportunities for physical activity and nutrition and became the Colorado Springs Pioneering Healthier Communities (CSPHC) Leadership Team. These individuals decided to focus efforts within a specific area of Colorado Springs, due to the size of the city and county. Harrison School District Two and its’ boundaries were chosen in order to target an area of high need in the community. The work initiated by this team has laid the foundation for the LiveWell Colorado Mobilization and Planning grant award for Colorado Springs. The members of the CSPHC team have transitioned into the Leadership Team for the LiveWell Colorado Springs initiative. These individuals have provided the guidance for the vision and mission, as well as the goals and strategies in the community action plan for LiveWell Colorado Springs. This team is the foundation of the LiveWell Colorado Springs initiative and will support the work of the entire coalition and its subcommittees.

The coalition will serve as an informative body and be comprised of subcommittees determined by sector: schools, community, worksites, and healthcare settings. Based on the community action plan for 2010, only the schools, community, and worksites subcommittees will currently be active. The role of the subcommittee members will be to support and execute the strategies of the community action plan in order to move the mission and vision of LiveWell Colorado Springs forward. The Leadership Team will serve as the steering committee, providing oversight to the initiative, as well as serve as members of various subcommittees, based on organizational affiliation and interest. As the LiveWell Colorado Springs effort moves forward and gains momentum, it is anticipated that this initiative will bring community organizations together and unite them towards the common goal of increasing opportunities for healthy eating and active living.
